Many opportunities that are faced in today's world, business and personal, are not taken. One reason is because people try to stay in their comfort zone. A zone where there is little risk, a somewhat known outcome, but minimal if any opportunity. When people take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way, not only does it change their life, but all those around are affected. This is great for personal and business growth. Why do people stay in their comfort zone? Is it the fear of failure? Is it the fear of the unknown? The fear of ‘what others' might think? These are all legitimate questions. But by getting people to step out of their comfort zone and take advantage of all the opportunities that are open to them, personal growth and development will occur. When people ‘break on through to the other side', that being the unknown result from taking advantage of an opportunity that is presented, great things happen. Personal growth explodes. People learn they can do more than they ever imagined. It's okay to take a little risk and reap the reward that awaits them. In business, if employees would take advantage of opportunities available to them within the company, reach out to others and improve themselves as well as those around them, the company flourishes.
Gary uses a well known children's game as a great way to illustrate this concept. It's a game that has some unknown risk and unknown rewards. These are things that keep people in their comfort zone. Playing the game gives everyone an opportunity to see that it's okay to take advantage of an opportunity and get out of your comfort zone. Yes, it has its risk, but it will have its reward also.
The risk of time is then brought to the forefront. Not knowing how much time we each have, we must not risk waiting. Take advantage of every opportunity when it arises, the time may never come again. Gary tells of his own life's experiences, including his near fatal car accident, his bout with depression, and his view of life today, to stress the importance of ‘now'.
